What could be nicer than warming up your numb fingers with a cup of steaming mulled wine on cold winter days, with the sweet and spicy smell of roasted almonds in your nose? These two "classics" can be found at the numerous Christmas markets in Saxony-Anhalt. In addition, each region of the state offers its own typical specialties, not only in Advent. They are regionally and sustainably produced, often in organic quality. The delicacies can be enjoyed in the dining rooms and at festivals in Saxony-Anhalt but can also be ordered directly to your home in a package.
The products with which the manufacturers in Saxony-Anhalt spoil their customers range from game meat, herbs and wild mushrooms to juices, liqueurs and wines. The gastronomy has picked up on this and prefers to cook regionally - from down-to-earth to extravagant. The trappings also have to be right, so some of the most beautiful restaurants in the state can be found in special historical locations. Worth mentioning are the Dessau Bauhaus buildings such as the Cafe Georgengarten or the Kornhaus on the river Elbe, the "Alte Canzley" in Lutherstadt Wittenberg, directly opposite the famous door on which the reformer posted his theses, the "Dinner for Lovers" high up in the Hausmann towers on the market square of Halle (Saale) or the rustic wine cellars in the Saale-Unstrut region. It was there during a press trip when a group of foreign journalists had been surprised to discover how modern the state's cuisine actually is.
The "Culinary Saxony-Anhalt" competition annually awards specialties from the region. They come home in gourmet boxes in two sizes. In the Altmark, too, a box is packed with typical products from sweet to savory and transports the delights across the state borders.
