Campo Amargo, a wholly-owned subsidiary of emp Biotech GmbH headquartered in Berlin, inaugurated its new production facility today at the Bitterfeld-Wolfen Chemical Park. The global company is significantly expanding its manufacturing capacities in Saxony-Anhalt for synthesis reagents used in DNA and RNA oligonucleotide production.
Speaking during the official opening ceremony and facility tour, Stefanie Pötzsch, State Secretary at the Ministry of Economy, Tourism, Agriculture, and Forestry of Saxony-Anhalt, stated: "The establishment of Campo Amargo provides significant momentum for the region. It highlights not only our state’s strength in the chemical industry but also its appeal in biotechnology. From Saxony-Anhalt, important medical reagents are delivered worldwide — Campo Amargo’s production will be a valuable addition to this portfolio."
Campo Amargo has repurposed an existing facility on Chlorstraße within the Bitterfeld-Wolfen Chemical Park to serve as its new production site. With approximately 1,800 m² of production space on a total plot of around 7,360 m², the facility provides ample room for specialized reagent manufacturing and future expansion. With an investment of approximately EUR 4 million in renovations, the company is laying the groundwork for additional development phases. The project is expected to create up to 19 new jobs. Campo Amargo manufactures specialized reagents used in the synthesis of synthetic DNA and RNA oligonucleotides, which are in growing demand across a broad range of therapeutic applications.
Uwe Möller, Managing Director of Campo Amargo, commented on choosing Bitterfeld-Wolfen: "We selected this location due to its excellent infrastructure and longstanding tradition in the chemical sector. The support from Bitterfeld-Wolfen Chemical Park and local partners has been exceptional." Dr. Derek Levison, co-managing director, added, "The ability to scale our production capacity here in Saxony-Anhalt to match the growing global demand decisively influenced our decision."
The company’s connection to the region is evident even in its name: Campo Amargo translates to "Bitterfeld" in Spanish, and the logo incorporates a stylized landmark—the Bitterfeld Arch. Andy Grabner, District Administrator of Anhalt-Bitterfeld, remarked, "Campo Amargo's decision to locate here demonstrates trust in our local economic strength and the innovative spirit of our community."
Armin Schenk, Mayor of Bitterfeld-Wolfen, added, "This new facility is an asset to our city and clearly signals the attractiveness of Bitterfeld-Wolfen for innovative companies and forward-looking technologies."
Bitterfeld-Wolfen Chemical Park, with its 130-year industry heritage, provides Campo Amargo with an ideal setting. It features a fully integrated infrastructure for chemical manufacturing: essential utilities and support services are located directly on site. A 20-kilometer pipe bridge network enables the efficient transport of liquids and solvents, and additional pipelines carry technical gases between Bitterfeld-Wolfen, Leuna, and Schkopau. The site’s internal recycling systems also help Campo Amargo and the park’s approximately 350 resident companies minimize waste. "Campo Amargo’s decision to locate here once again highlights the critical role of robust industrial infrastructure. With our integrated material supply network and tightly coordinated technical services, we offer ideal conditions for growth, innovation, and sustainable production," said Kai Uwe Krauel, Managing Director of the Bitterfeld-Wolfen Chemical Park.
